Berlusconi: Together with Merkel we can calm Russia down

Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, leader of the Front Italy party, said he could act together with former German Chancellor Angela Merkel as a mediator to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.

"The goal, of course, is to end the Russia-Ukraine war. At this stage, I don't see any financial loss for Putin. I believe that it is able to withstand the sanctions and the approval for setting the ceiling for natural gas, but I support the position of the European Union", said the Italian tycoon and former prime minister.

Speaking about the sanctions against Russia, Berlusconi expressed "regret and disappointment" that Moscow is strengthening the "communist totalitarianism of China" instead of getting closer to the European Union.

The former prime minister said that he does not see that Russia is suffering economic losses due to sanctions.

"It seems to me that it is absolutely capable of withstanding sanctions and gas price restrictions," Berlusconi said.
