The EU approves the candidate country status for Bosnia

The General Affairs Council of the EU has approved the granting of candidate country status to Bosnia and Herzegovina.

"Radio Free Europe has learned that the ministers who are responsible for European affairs, during the meeting, which is still ongoing, have already approved the conclusions which state that Bosnia and Herzegovina will be granted the status of a candidate country with the confirmation of the European Council".

This decision of the ministers will be confirmed by the heads of the EU member governments during the summit that will be held on Thursday, December 15.

“Në kontekstin aktual gjeopolitik, Këshilli i BE-së thekson urgjencën që shteti të ecë përpara në rrugën drejt BE-së, veçanërisht përmes përmbushjes të 14 prioriteteve kyçe për hapjen e negociatave të anëtarësimit të BE-së, që janë identifikuar në opinionin e Komisionit Evropian për aplikimin e Bosnjë Hercegovinës për anëtarësim në BE, të miratuar në Këshill më 2019”, u tha në dokumentin e konkluzioneve, në të cilin ka pasur qasje më herët REL-i.

Në tetor, Komisioni Evropian rekomandojë dhënien e statusit kandidat dhe anëtarësimin e plotë të Bosnjës në BE, por tha se shteti duhet të përmbushë disa kritere.

Among the criteria set for Sarajevo were the approval of changes in the laws for courts and prosecutions, the approval of a law for the prevention of conflict of interest, the undertaking of concrete steps in the fight against corruption and organized crime, but also ensuring the functioning of some mechanisms for adapting national programs to those of the EU.

Of the countries of the Western Balkans, only Kosovo still does not have the status of a candidate country. Prishtina has warned that during this week it will apply for EU membership./REL
