High prices, low salaries and pensions/ The three biggest concerns of Albanians

A recent survey on security in the Region conducted by the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC) revealed that the three most important economic problems for Albanians are high prices, low wages and low pensions.

The RCC surveyed around 6,000 citizens in the Region, who were asked, among other things, what are the three most important problems in your economy: inflation, inequality, unemployment, wages, pensions, taxes, fuel prices and corporate corruption. The majority of Albanian citizens, 73%, were concerned about high prices.

The second most important concern for 57 percent of citizens was low wages and the third most important concern in economic terms for 41 percent was low pensions. As the data from the table show, Albanian citizens had higher levels of dissatisfaction with pensions, in relation to other citizens of the Region. Albanians were less concerned about unemployment and inequality than citizens of the region.

Compared to the Region, Albanians expressed higher concern about the level of taxes. 22 percent of Albanian citizens considered taxes a concern, while the regional average was 15%. Corporate corruption was less of a concern for Albanians, while Bosniaks and Serbs considered this aspect a problem.

While Albania has the highest fuel prices in the Region, for Albanians the prices are less worrying. At least in Kosovo fuel prices are 30 percent cheaper than in Albania, for 29 percent of citizens there they are a problem, while in our country only 20 percent.

Unemployment seems to be less of a concern in Albania than in the Region, as only 31 percent of Albanians said that unemployment is a problem compared to 36%, which was the Regional average. Since its inception in 2021, SecuriMeter has provided important data on public perceptions, serving as a tool for policymakers to create evidence-based responses to emerging challenges.

This year's survey underscores the interconnected nature of security issues in the Western Balkans and the critical need for solutions./Monitor
