The European Commission presented this Wednesday a draft proposal for the circulation of the digital euro.

The vice-president of the European Commission, Vladis Dombrovskis, said that the digital euro gives consumers a payment alternative at the European level, in addition to the options that exist today.

"With the digital euro, people will be able to pay public money. They will be able to pay online and offline. Having a digital euro wallet on your phone or device will be the same as having banknotes or coins in your pocket. You will be able to pay with the same ease, without the need for an internet connection", said Dombrovskis.

This EC proposal comes at a time when the European Central Bank has made progress in creating the digital euro and is in the final phase of this project.

The European Central Bank is expected to give the green light for the digital euro in October, with the aim of using it in 2027./ CNA.al
