Hotels, foreigners keep tourism afloat/ Non-residents rose 63% in May

Non-resident visitors to accommodation facilities in the country increased by 63 percent in May 2024, compared to May a year ago.

The official figures published by the Institute of Statistics for accommodation structures once again reflect the positive progress of tourism in the first 5 months of the year, without the "slowdown" that tourist operators reported for June and the beginning of July.

In total, non-residents have recorded a number over three times higher than the presence of residents. This tendency is also confirmed by the tour operators for June and July where the locals are choosing to rest outside in a good part of the cases.

According to INSTAT, the total number of visitors has increased by 45.8%, compared to May 2023. The following two indicators follow the same trend: the number of resident visitors has increased by 12.9%; the number of non-resident visitors increased by 63.2%.

The same publication underlines that the number of total net-stays has increased by 30.9%, compared to May 2023. The following indicators follow this trend: the number of net-stays by residents has decreased by 2.0%; the number of net-stays by non-residents has increased by 47.1%.

Most of the visitors are located in the center region, which includes Tirana and Elbasan, where there is also the largest increase in non-residents.

In Coastal Areas, this indicator has increased by 42.2%, compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of non-resident visitors in "Hotels and similar accommodation" has increased by 62.2%", the document states.

INSTAT estimates that in the month of May 2024, the highest number of visitors results: according to regions in the "Center Region" (54.9%); according to areas close to the coast in "Non-coastal areas" (50.2%); according to the type of accommodation structures in "Hotels and similar accommodation" (92.3%).

The higher flow of visitors has automatically increased the total overnight stays in the accommodation structures in the country. During the month of May 2024, the number of total stays increased by 30.9% compared to the month of May 2023.

The number of night stays of non-resident visitors who have been accommodated in the Center Region has increased by 63.8%. In Coastal Areas, this indicator has increased by 39.3%, compared to the same period of the previous year. The number of night stays of non-resident visitors who were accommodated in "Hotels and similar accommodations" increased by 46.0%.

In the month of May 2024, the highest number of net stays was realized: according to regions in the "Center Region" (55.0%); • according to areas close to the coast in "Coastal Areas" (55.8%); according to the type of accommodation structures in "Hotels and similar accommodation" (92.6%).

INSTAT estimates that there is also an increase in the net rate of use of rooms and beds in the country. During this month, the occupancy rate of the rooms of "Hotels and similar accommodations" is 25.1%, against 18.7% that was in the month of May 2023.
