Germany adds public taps as measure against heat

Because Germany is also facing more and more frequent heat waves and long droughts, the German government wants to take additional measures to make life easier for citizens. Municipalities and communes will have to increase the number of public taps with drinking water in as many public places as possible, according to a government decision.

"Access to drinking water should be as simple as possible," says Environment Minister Steffi Lemke. "Drinking water taps are a basic element of care in cases of heat," says the green politician referring to extremes of weather and periods of drought.

In the first step, 1000 taps will have to be added to the other 1300 taps. According to the law, such taps will in the future be a standard part of the public water supply./DW
