Europe was scorched by heat/ Report: World's third warmest August ever

This August was the world's third warmest August ever recorded, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S).

Temperatures were 0.49°C above the monthly average from 1991 to 2020. The report's data shows that August 2025 was 0.22°C colder than the two warmest Augusts ever recorded in 2023 and 2024.

Compared to pre-industrial levels, last month was 1.29°C warmer. And the report says the past 12 months, from September 2024 to August 2025, have been 0.64°C above the 1991 to 2020 average and 1.53°C above pre-industrial levels.

Overall, this summer was the world's third warmest on record, 0.47°C above the 1991-2020 average. It was only cooler than the summers of 2023 and 2024.

More than a million hectares of land have been burned across Europe so far this year, an area larger than Cyprus. /CNA
