Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa, two of Europe's oldest lakes, lie in a mountainous area along the borders of North Macedonia, Albania and Greece. Lakes have existed for at least 1 million years and possibly longer.

This is what "NASA Earth" writes on its Facebook page alongside a satellite image of the lakes captured on August 19, 2022.

Ohrid is the largest and deepest of the two, with an average depth of 155 meters. Prespa has an average depth of 14 meters.

Most of the world's millions of lakes are less than 18,000 years old and were formed when glaciers melted at the end of the Ice Age. Geologists classify only 30 lakes, including Ohrid and Prespa, as "ancient", writes NASA.

In 2010, scientists of the International Astronomical Union gave the name Ohrid to a lake on Titan, a moon that orbits Saturn./euronews
