Teledermatology/ The impact of this new development in technology

Not long ago, a visit to a dermatologist was considered necessary only for skin problems or before a photo shoot.

Not anymore. Whether it's due to the rise of social media or celebrity culture, the last decade has seen the quest for seemingly flawless skin grow rapidly.

A recent study found that young people spend more money on their skin than any other age group (and more than previous generations). And in 2023 alone, spending on skin care by young people and teens increased by 20%.

Technology has also made getting expert advice increasingly accessible. Online dermatology developed rapidly during the pandemic when Covid-19 restrictions meant that over 90% of dermatologists were using "teledermatology" (i.e. video calls and digital imaging to discuss skin concerns remotely) compared to 14.1% before Covid, the American Academy of Dermatology said.

The advent of digital dermatology, driven by increasingly innovative and sophisticated digital tools, not only smartphones and video calling apps, but also artificial intelligence, is enabling a growing number of global brands to diagnose, prescribe and manufacture custom creams through virtual consultation rooms./ CNA
