Marcelo Bielsa has agreed to become the coach of the Uruguay national team. Jorge Casales, a member of the executive committee of the Uruguayan Football Federation, told the Associated Press that the former Leeds coach will sign a contract until the 2026 World Cup.

"The only thing missing is the firm", he declared. In a few days, the arrival in Montevideo of the 67-year-old Bielsa is expected.

His first matches as a coach will be in June, when Uruguay will play two friendlies against Nicaragua and Cuba, while South American World Cup qualifiers will begin in September.

Bielsa coached Argentina from 1998 to 2004 and Chile from 2007 to 2011. "The negotiations with Bielsa lasted three months," said Casales.
