Szczesny ends football: I started it to make a living...

Wojciech Szczesny has closed it with the football played. The Polish goalkeeper has announced his retirement, just a few days after he left Juventus.

Through a letter on his profile, Szczesny has revealed the unexpected decision.

Football player's letter:

I left Warsaw, my hometown in June 2006 to join Arsenal with a dream, to make a living from football.

Little did I know that it would be the beginning of a lifelong journey. I didn't know that I would play for the biggest clubs in the world and represent my country 84 times. Little did I know that not only would I make a living from gaming, but gaming would become my entire life.

I have not only achieved my dreams, I have come where my imagination would not dare to take me. I played matches at the highest level with the best players in history without ever feeling inferior.

I have made lifelong friends, created unforgettable memories and met people who have had a tremendous impact on my life. Everything I have and everything I am, I owe to the beautiful game of football….

But I also gave the game everything I had. I gave the game 18 years of my life, every day, no excuses. Today, my body still feels ready for challenges, but my heart is no longer there. I feel that now is the time to devote all my attention to my family, my wonderful wife Marina and our two beautiful children Liam and Noelia. That is why I have decided to retire from professional football.

The end of a trip is a time for reflection and gratitude. There are many people I should thank in this place, but I will try to do so personally with each of them. But I owe you, the fans, a special thanks for being on this journey with me. For support and criticism, for love and hate, for being the most beautiful and romantic part of football. Without you, this wouldn't make sense! Thank you!

Now, every story has an end, but in life every end is a new beginning. Only time will tell what this new path will bring me. But if the last 18 years have taught me anything, it's that nothing is impossible and trust me, I'm going to dream big.
