The aim is to "stop" the Premier League, the special proposal from Germany

Fernando Carro, CEO of Bayer Leverkusen, has proposed establishing a salary cap for footballers, with a model similar to that of the NBA.

According to him, the financial dominance of the Premier League is risking to diminish the importance of the Champions League. The Spaniard made this statement during the “Future of Finance” conference in Frankfurt, stressing that only a measure with global implementation would have a real effect.

UEFA has already set rules to limit clubs' spending in proportion to their income, but the gap with the Premier League remains large. Examples such as La Liga, where there is a salary cap under Javier Tebas, show that such measures are feasible. However, the idea is expected to bring opposing views between clubs and federations.

UEFA reports show that in the 2023/24 season alone, the Premier League has collected over 7.1 billion euros, almost double the Bundesliga. For Carro, without such a mechanism, European competitions risk losing their competitive balance.
