He risked 99 lashes, the decision is made for Ronaldo

Cristiano Ronaldo will not be present in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Asian Champions League between Al Nassr and Esteghlal. The Saudi club has decided not to field the Portuguese star for this important match, not for sporting reasons, but due to a sensitive legal issue related to the Iranian authorities.

It all started in September 2023, when Al Nasr was in Tehran for a match against Persepolis. During their stay in the Iranian capital, the Saudi team was met with a grand welcome from thousands of fans, who had filled the streets and the hotel where the team was staying, with the sole purpose of getting a close look at Ronaldo.

Among the fans was a disabled Iranian artist, known for her extraordinary talent in creating works of art using her feet. Ronaldo, known for his gestures of solidarity and support for people with disabilities, stopped for a few moments with her, hugging her and kissing her on the forehead as a sign of respect and kindness.

But this gesture, which in most countries of the world would be considered an act of kindness and humanity, has been interpreted differently in Iran. According to the country's moral laws, any form of physical intimacy between a man and a woman who are not married is considered a serious offense, which in special cases can lead to severe punishments.

Following this episode, Iranian authorities have accused Ronaldo of "violating moral norms", a charge that, under the laws of the Islamic Republic, can result in a physical punishment of up to 99 lashes.

Although it is unclear whether Iranian authorities would actually take such measures against a world star like Ronaldo, his presence on Iranian territory is considered high-risk. This has led Al Nasr's leaders to take the drastic decision to avoid any diplomatic or legal incident by leaving the Portuguese out of the match.
