Five teams in the Champions League/ England and Spain lead, here's how

Italy is playing its last chances to secure five teams in the next edition of the Champions League.

It all depends on the seasonal rankings, which are updated after each round of European competitions. Italy currently sits in third place, behind England and Spain, having been penalised by the early eliminations of Bologna, Juventus, Milan and Atalanta from the Champions League. To secure five places in next season's Champions League, it is essential that Italy finish the season in the top two of this classification.

Despite Liverpool's elimination by PSG in the Champions League round of 16, England leads convincingly and still has five teams in the competition out of seven initially in all European competitions.

In second place, what Italy is aiming for, is Spain, which will lose one of Madrid's two teams, but could retain five of the seven teams that started the competition.

Italy is in third place, with hopes hanging over Inter, Lazio, Roma and Fiorentina. Inter's qualification to the quarter-finals after eliminating Feyenoord has brought important points, but the main goal is for all Italian teams to reach the final stages of the competition to secure second place and the qualification of a fifth team to the Champions League for next season.

In this context, the match between Athletic Bilbao and Roma in the 1/8 of the Europa League takes on great importance. The red and yellows have a 2-1 advantage after the first leg and a qualification to the quarterfinals would be essential for Italy's standings.
