Leaving UEFA? The Russian Football Federation makes the final decision

Russia's Football Federation withdrew and decided to stay in UEFA, after threats to join the Asian confederation.

The Russian Federation (RFS) announced that it intends to form a working group with UEFA to organize a return to international competitions (10 months ago, since the invasion of Ukraine, Russian sport was suspended from international competitions).

"The Executive Committee of the Russian Federation has made the decision to propose to UEFA the formation of a working group to resolve as soon as possible the issue of the return of Russian clubs and national teams to official international tournaments," said the president of Russian Federation, Alexander Dioukov.

The official added that three representatives from UEFA, FIFA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be invited to participate in this working group to unlock, for example, participation in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The RFS had recently hinted that it could leave UEFA to join the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), but this would have serious financial consequences for Russian clubs.
