Jesús Navas becomes the oldest player in the history of Spain

2023-06-16 09:04:01, Sport CNA

The first match of the Spanish team at the Twente Stadium will go down as the day Jesús Navas became the oldest player to defend the jersey of the Spanish team. Absent since the October 2020 1-0 defeat in Kiev, the Sevilla winger makes his 47th appearance for the national team to overtake Luis Suarez, who played in 1972 at the age of 36 years, 11 months and 12 day. Navas sets his counter to 38 years on November 21.

The Sevilla man's superb run of form, explained by his incredible finish to the season which was key to Sevilla's response to winning the UEFA Europa League, has put him ahead of Carvajal.

Navas' debut with Spain is a world away. On 14 November 2009, against Argentina at the Calderón, Navas opened a path that would lead him to the World Cup - he is part of Iniesta's goal move - which also brought the European Cup.

After the World Cup in Brazil he disappeared with an injury and did not return until March 2019. He did so to start against Norway at the Mestalla ahead of Carvajal. This phase lasted until the Kiev match. After losing the Euro and the World Cup, he now returns with a coach who knows him well. "Imagine how excited I am to have him here because I was his coach when he was 15," De la Fuente explained yesterday.
