Formula 1, Verstappen wins "pole position" in Azerbaijan

Max Verstappen will start from pole position at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix after an unusual qualifying session with six red flag interruptions.

Carlos Sainz in Williams finished second, while Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls finished third. Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris failed to capitalize, with the Australian crashing in the final phase of qualifying and the Briton not having a good lap, finishing seventh and ninth respectively.

Charles Leclerc crashed early in the final stretch, temporarily halting the race. Piastri also caused another disruption, while Verstappen was the only one to improve his time on the final restart of the session.

Mercedes managed to position Kimi Antonelli and George Russell in fifth and sixth, although the Italian is under investigation for an overtaking incident under yellow flags. Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton failed to make it through the final stage and will start from 12th.

Red Bull's Yuki Tsunoda finished ahead of Norris, securing a good result for the team. Isack Hadjar finished eighth, while Leclerc and Piastri were left behind due to their accidents.
