El Salvador/ The number of victims reaches 12 after the fierce clash in the stadium

Twelve people were killed in a stampede at a stadium in El Salvador where soccer fans had gathered for a local tournament on Saturday, May 20, police said.

Authorities say initial reports indicate a riot broke out among fans who tried to enter the Cuscatlan stadium in San Salvador, the capital of the Central American country, to watch the match between the Alianza and FAS teams.

"According to preliminary data, we have 12 victims," ??police director Mauricio Arriaza told reporters, writes REL.

Interior Minister Juan Carlos Bidegain said civil defense services were the first to respond to the scene.

Carlos Fuentes, spokesman for the Comandos de Salvamento emergency service, said aid had been provided to more than 500 people.

"Around 100 people were taken to the hospital, in serious condition, some showing signs of suffocation and other types of trauma," said Fuentes.
