Duka remembers the beginnings and challenges in the AFF: I remember that October

The President of the Albanian Football Association, Armand Duka, has given a different interview to the magazine "Bordo".

The head of the Albanian football government focused on the great dream of participating in the World Cup, emphasizing that it is a real objective for which they are working with dedication, after two participations in the European Championship. President Duka recalled the historic moment of qualifying for Euro 2016, described the challenges of leading the Albanian Football Association, such as building infrastructure and strengthening ties with UEFA and FIFA, and emphasized the ambition to bring the European Super Cup to Albania in 2028.

The dream of the World Cup is on the verge, how tangible is this dream for you?

"Football is a magical sport precisely because it gives you the opportunity to dream. More than a dream, reaching the finals of the biggest competition in the world is an objective that we have been working towards all these years. We have already experienced two participations in the European Championship and I think that the National Team has grown along this journey, where we have a consolidated group of quality footballers, who together with the technical staff are working to take us closer and closer to our goal every day.

"Of course it will be very difficult, but the team must hope for the maximum and fight until the end to reach second place. We must bear in mind that the play-off phase is also of a very high degree of difficulty, but the chances are there and in football anything can happen. What we ask is for the team to fight until the end, with heart and passion, keeping the hope and dream alive to reach where we have never been before."

 

What has been the most challenging moment during your leadership of the Albanian Football Federation?

"I cannot separate the challenges from each other as isolated events. In these years, each stage has had its own difficulties and dilemmas. Building a modern football infrastructure from scratch, establishing a reliable organizational system, building cooperative relationships with UEFA and FIFA, are not things that happen overnight. They are long processes that require vision, patience, and a lot of patience.

But when I'm asked about a moment that sums up this entire confrontation with challenges, I always think of that evening in October 2015, in Armenia. We were in a stadium empty of Albanians, but with a team that felt the full weight of a nation on its shoulders. We won 3-0 and made history, for the first time, Albania was going to a European Championship.

Ai moment nuk ishte thjesht një sukses sportiv. Ishte një lloj shpërthimi emocional, një shpërblim për çdo rezistencë, për çdo pengesë që ishte kapërcyer gjatë rrugës. Isha aty me ekipin, me stafin, dhe pavarësisht se mungonin tifozët në tribuna, emocioni i asaj nate ishte më i fortë se çdo stadium plot. Kualifikimi në Euro 2016 nuk ishte vetëm një ëndërr e realizuar, por një pikë kthese për gjithë mënyrën se si e shihnim veten në botën e futbollit."



Kur kujton momentin, që morët drejtimin e FSHF-së, cila ishte ëndrra juaj?

"Kur mora drejtimin e Federatës, shumë njerëz afër meje më thanë: “Është një detyrë e lehtë, pozicion nderi… nuk ka shumë angazhime, thjesht do të jesh figurë përfaqësuese”. Por nuk vonoi shumë dhe e kuptova që ishte krejt e kundërta.

Futbolli është një botë që të përpin me të gjitha dimensionet e saj, kërkon përkushtim të plotë, vizion, vendimmarrje të forta dhe një rezistencë të jashtëzakonshme ndaj presioneve që vijnë nga të gjitha drejtimet. Në atë kohë, futbolli shqiptar ishte larg nga gjithçka që kemi sot. Nuk kishte infrastrukturë, nuk kishte një sistem të ndërtuar, as identitet të qartë në arenën ndërkombëtare. Por kjo më dha shtysën për të patur një ëndërr shumë të qartë: të ndërtonim një themel të fortë që do t’i jepte futbollit shqiptar jo vetëm organizim dhe kushte, por edhe krenari.

Më pas, shumë nga ato që dikur dukeshin si ëndrra, nisën të bëhen realitet. Pjesëmarrja në dy Europiane, finalja e UEFA Conference League në Tiranë me Romën e Murinjos dhe Marash Kumbullën, finalet e Euro U17 në katër qytete të Shqipërisë, dhe tashmë, në vitin 2027, do të mirëpresim finalet e Euro U21, kompeticioni i dytë më i rëndësishëm në kontinent për nga niveli. Ka qenë një rrugëtim i gjatë dhe aspak i lehtë. Por në fund të ditës, ajo që ka rëndësi është që sot nuk jemi më jashtë loje. Jemi pjesë e hartës së futbollit europian, dhe jemi të vendosur të qëndrojmë aty me dinjitet."

 

Sot, sa ëndrra keni bërë realitet dhe a ka një cak ëndrra juaj në këtë drejtim?

"Ka nga ato ditë kur ndalem dhe mendoj për rrugën që kemi bërë dhe e kuptoj që shumë nga ato që dikur i thërrisnim ëndrra, sot janë realitet i prekshëm. Dikur na dukej e pamundur që Shqipëria të kishte stadiume moderne, apo të organizonte një finale europiane. Sot kemi pritur në Tiranë finalen e UEFA Conference League, kemi mirëpritur Kampionatin Europian U17, do të presim Euro U21 në 2027 dhe Kombëtarja ka shtuar pjesëmarrjet dhe rritur performancat në kompeticionet e rëndësishme.

Këto nuk janë vetëm arritje sportive, janë kthesa historike për vetë mënyrën si shihet Shqipëria në hartën e futbollit europian. Kemi ambicie që të shkojmë më tej, shumë më tej. Gjatë vizitës së fundit të Presidentit të UEFA-s, Aleksander ?eferin në Tiranë, unë i propozova zyrtarisht që Shqipëria të merret në konsideratë për të mirëpritur Superkupën e Europës në vitin 2028.

"It is an achievable objective and a challenge for which we are seriously prepared, as a country, as an infrastructure, as an organization. Of course, the biggest dream continues to remain the World Cup. Seeing the Albanian flag among the 48 best teams in the world would be the culmination of this journey."
