Ancelotti sentenced to prison in Spain

Carlo Ancelotti has been sentenced by Spanish justice to a year in prison for tax evasion committed in 2014, during his first season at Real Madrid.

For 2015, he was declared innocent. The current coach of the Brazilian national team was also fined 386 thousand euros. The sentence does not provide for effective imprisonment, as Ancelotti has no criminal record and the sentence is under two years.

The Madrid court also ruled that Ancelotti will not receive public subsidies or tax breaks for three years. Prosecutors had accused him of evading more than 1 million euros in total for the period 2014-2015.

Ancelotti has stated that he was unaware of any breach, stressing that the contract structure with image rights was common practice at the time. He also cited the case of previous manager Mourinho as a similar example.
