"I encourage the government to address citizens' concerns"/ Marta

European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, during the intergovernmental conference also spoke about the protests taking place in Tirana.

Kos said that the protests do not jeopardize Albania's path, but added that environmental protection is part of the main criteria for membership. She added that there are a number of laws that need to be changed to close Chapter 27, the Environment.

"We do not see Albania's path at risk. Environmental protection is part of the criteria for EU membership. There are a number of laws that need to be changed to meet this criterion. Even before the protests started, we had agreed to repeal the 2024 amendments to the law on protected areas and the law on strategic investments. These changes need to be made to close Chapter 27. I encourage the authorities to do this as soon as possible. Protests are part of broader democratic processes and the way countries handle protests is part of pluralist democratic processes. I encourage the government to take steps and address citizens' concerns. Chapter 27 is one of the most demanding, not only because of the protest but because Albania must harmonize the legislation that we agreed upon when we opened the group chapters. Nothing will happen in this area that is not in harmony with European legislation," Kos said. /CNA
