The High Prosecutorial Council has broken its silence after CNA's interest in a reaction to the ongoing attacks by Prime Minister Edi Rama and Mayor Erion Veliaj against Prosecutor Ols Dado and Judge Erion Bani.
KLP condemns the attacks and pressure against SPAK prosecutors and in particular against prosecutor Ols Dado.
The KLP calls for any claim, accusation or complaint against a prosecutor to be handled in accordance with the law and within the institutional framework.
“The High Prosecutorial Council (KLP) expresses concern about the ongoing campaign of attacks, derogatory labels and attempts to pressure SPAK prosecutors in general and the prosecutor of the Special Prosecution Office Olsi Dado in particular. Statements articulated not only by certain media segments, but also by persons involved in investigations or accused by them, including high-ranking officials, damage the integrity and trust in Albanian justice. Verbal attacks violate the fair investigative and judicial process, as a fundamental guarantee of the rule of law.
The KLP calls for any allegation, accusation or complaint against a prosecutor to be handled in accordance with the law and within the institutional framework. The KLP reiterates the importance of respecting ethical standards of reporting by the media, ensuring impartiality in informing the public opinion, in order to avoid any form of disinformation that could affect the integrity of judicial processes. In respect of an independent judicial system, we call for patience and prudence. Any attempt to influence through public pressure or political debate undermines the principles of democracy.
"The High Prosecutorial Council stands in support of prosecutor Olsi Dado and all prosecutors of the Republic of Albania, so that they exercise their function in accordance with the law, as the only guarantee that justice functions on the basis of facts, evidence and due legal process," the KLP's response states.
A day earlier, CNA contacted the chairwoman of the KLP, Mirela Bogani, regarding Veliaj's lynching comments against prosecutor Dado. Bogdani said that she could not answer for herself, as they are a collegial body, but stressed that the High Prosecutorial Council would meet to decide how to react to Veliaj's attacks.
"I can't answer for myself alone, because we are a collegial body. If you look, we issued two press statements last week. We will decide whether to react or not (on this case). As soon as we share it, you will receive a notification, as always. "- Mirela Bogdani told CNA./ CNA
