"Please like, share, donate" / Families in Syrian camps go "live" on Tik Tok and ask for help

Families in Syrian camps are begging for donations on Tik Tok as the company benefits 71% of them.

According to the BBC, children go "live" for hours, begging for digital gifts of monetary value. "BBC" informs that in these videos the value reached up to 900 dollars for an hour, but people in these countries get back a small part of this money.

Tik Tok users noticed that their homepages featured "live" videos of families in Syrian camps, which caught their attention and raised concerns. In the camps of northwestern Syria, the BBC found that the trend was enabled by so-called "Tik Tok intermediaries", who gave families the equipment and everything to broadcast.

The middlemen said they worked with Tik Tok-affiliated agencies in China and the Middle East, which gave families access to Tik Tok accounts. These agencies are part of the company's global strategy to recruit broadcasters and encourage users to spend more time on the app.

Mona Ali-Al Karim and her 6 children are one of the families who live on Tik Tok every day, sitting on the floor of their tent for hours, repeating the few sentences they know in English: "Please , like it, please share it, please donate it."

Mona's husband was killed in an airstrike and she is using this method to raise money for her daughter's operation, who has gone blind.

The gifts they ask for are virtual, but translate into real money. Viewers can send gifts from roses that cost a few cents to virtual lions that cost around $500. /CNA.al
