The best Mediterranean islands for family vacations

Days of delicious food, sea kayaking, exploring ancient tombs and, of course, beaches. Whatever your kids' tastes, the Mediterranean's diverse network of islands offers experiences for every family.

Around 3,000 islands are scattered across the Mediterranean, like stepping stones to a world where time moves more slowly and life has the rhythm of quiet family vacations.

Beyond stunning beaches, each island has its own character, giving children the opportunity to discover language, food, history and culture.

For outdoor adventures and city life. The north of the island is wild, with limestone mountains that descend to the sea. Families can take panoramic trips to the bays of Cap de Formentor, while in Pollença children play in the square and try ensaïmadas .

For the older ones there are hiking, cycling, caving and water sports. Near Cala Ratjada there are soft sandy bays, while Cuevas del Drach offers a fabulous world of stalactites and an underground lake.

For pretty villages and surfing. Lindos, on the east of the island, is an ideal base for families who want the beach and an authentic Greek atmosphere. Lindos Beach has calm waters, while further north is Pallas with water sports.

The area is also suitable for driving trips to the mountain villages of the south and for sampling local honey and olive oil. To the south is Prasonisi, known for windsurfing and kitesurfing.

For rural tranquility and history. Just a 30-minute ferry ride from Malta, Gozo is greener, smaller and less visited. The UNESCO-listed ?gantija Temple is 5,500 years old and older than the pyramids of Egypt.

Kids also love ?ittadella above the city of Victoria. On the coast, Dwejra Bay stands out, while Ramla Bay offers kayaking, snorkelling and paddleboarding .

For Greek myths and beach life. The island has forested mountains, clear waters and famous beaches like Myrtos.

Sami is the starting point for Melissani Cave, with its underground lake. In Ainos National Park you can go hiking during the day and stargazing at night.

For coastal landscapes and wild nature. The island offers beautiful bays, quiet villages and farms among olive and orange groves.

Families can relax in Palombaggia or take boat trips to the Calanques de Piana. For hikers, a section of the GR20 trail is an unforgettable experience.

For beaches and ancient history. Beyond its famous coastline, Sardinia has many quiet archaeological sites for family visits.

After southern beaches like Santa Margherita di Pula, Su Giudeu and Tuerredda, you can continue towards Cagliari and then inland to discover the nuraghe , the Bronze Age conical towers unique to the island.

For ancient history and nature trails. In the southwest, Paphos combines culture, history and beaches. From there, cruises to hidden bays, visits to Greek and Roman ruins and walks to the Tombs of the Kings depart.

Further north, Avakas Gorge and Akamas National Forest Park offer gentle walks, while Lara Beach entices with snorkelling and the chance to see baby turtles from May to August. / National Geographic
