Happiness is a choice, but that doesn't mean it's easy. 

Leaders at the Institute for Global Happiness are constantly thinking about the small, intentional things we can all do to make our communities more positive, content, and resilient. 

Often, it starts with how we talk to others and ourselves. If you use any of these six phrases every day, you really are happier than most:

1. "I get to..." 

Reframing “I have to…” into “I get to…” is a powerful way to tap into a mindset of gratitude.

2. "Tell me more...

When someone starts opening up, many of us have a tendency to want to solve their problems or give them advice. 

Instead, simply saying, “Tell me more,” with its implicit offering of time and energy to listen, allows them to continue processing their feelings and thoughts.

3. Will this matter next year?

It's easy to magnify the anxiety of the moment and feel like there's no way out.

Anxiety outbursts happen to many of us, even over little things like being 10 minutes late for an appointment, forgetting to pay a bill and getting slapped with some interest, or getting no response to a text to a friend. 

4. “I will focus on…” 

Instead of going from one thing to another, take a minute and write down one thing that you will focus on, either at the beginning or at the end of the day tomorrow.
