"She would be alive if..."/ Princess Diana's former loyal driver

Princess Diana's former chauffeur has spoken for the first time in decades and made the bold claim that she would still be alive today if he had been driving that night.

The mystery and intrigue surrounding her death is still a hot topic 27 years later, as people still wonder what really happened on that fateful day in Paris.

Just 36 years old at the time of her death, the Princess of Wales died from her injuries in the early hours of August 31, 1997.

Her former driver, Steve Davies during his interview said that he was banned from driving Princess Diana's car on the night of the accident.

"It happened overnight. I was banned from driving her car. After the Christmas holidays they told me she didn't want me around her, they wouldn't even let me wash her car. I was still on her payroll, but the whole thing was weird. I could sit in the garage for ten hours a day, doing nothing, and then go home, I was broke, humiliated," he said.

Foreign media reports that at that time charges were brought against the driver with the claim that he was part of a deep state conspiracy against the Princess. Steve Davies was framed as a newspaper spy and Diana was warned that her car was being followed and bugged.

“The consequence for me was that I was forced to leave the work I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Royal service means having faith and being loyal, showing prudence, having a sense of duty," he said.

He then shared what angers him the most at the moment.

"I'm not the type of person to waste time and energy on resentment or anger, but she died believing I cheated on her and that's something I can never forget or forgive," he said.

Davies believes Princess Diana would still be alive today if he had been driving her car that fateful night.

"I believe Diana would be alive today if I had driven her to Paris. I would never have let things happen the way they did that night. I have always taken extra precautions when it comes to her safety. I've taken it to different situations and I've always paid attention to every little thing, I've always insisted on wearing a seat belt and I've carefully checked all the conditions before going anywhere by car", he concluded. /CNA
