Switzerland bans face coverings in public spaces from January

A controversial decision by Switzerland to ban face coverings in public spaces, popularly known as the "burqa ban", will take effect on January 1, 2025, the Swiss government said on Wednesday.

The ban, which passed by a narrow margin in a 2021 referendum and was condemned by Muslim associations, was initiated by the same group that organized the ban on new minarets in 2009.

The Federal Governing Council said in a statement that it has set the start date of the ban and that anyone who violates it without right will face a fine of up to 1,000 Swiss francs.

The ban does not apply to aircraft or diplomatic and consular facilities, while faces can also be covered in places of worship and other holy places, the government said.

Face coverings will remain permitted for health and safety reasons, local customs or weather conditions, she said. It will also be allowed for artistic and entertainment reasons, as well as for advertising, she added.

If these coverings are necessary for personal protection in the exercise of freedom of expression and association, they should be allowed if the responsible authority has already approved it and public order is not harmed, the statement says./ Rel
