Varhelyi: Montenegro, the most advanced candidate country in membership

The European Commissioner for Neighborhood and Enlargement, Oliver Varhelyi, said on Tuesday in Podgorica that Montenegro should take advantage of the great opportunity and favorable moment to accelerate the European path, in order to revive the process of enlargement of the European Union with membership.

Mr. Varhelyi announced in Montenegro that he has come with a clear message.

"Montenegro is the most advanced candidate country in membership negotiations. We are all ready to close the temporary standards, our aim is to take Montenegro to the next level", Mr. Varhelyi assessed.

During the meeting with the European Commissioner, the President of Montenegro, Jakov Milatovic, emphasized the importance of full membership in the EU, which, as he said , "is a goal of foreign policy and the expectation of Montenegro, as a leader in the negotiation process, to becomes a full member of the EU until 2028".

Even the Montenegrin Prime Minister, Milojko Spajic, thanked Mr. Varhelyi for his support to Montenegro. He wrote on the X network that " with such encouragement we will continue to work even harder on our way to the EU".

To close the remaining chapters of the negotiations, Montenegro must make progress on chapters 23 and 24, which deal with the rule of law and the fight against organized crime.

Montenegro was considered a leading country in the European Union accession process in the region and has opened all chapters in the accession negotiations.

However, as a result of the political and institutional crisis, from December 2021, Montenegro has not had an intergovernmental conference, due to insufficient progress in the reforms necessary for the membership process./ VOA
