"Universal Music" breaks the contract with TikTok/ Users cannot use

Universal Music is pulling millions of its songs from social network TikTok after their payment negotiations broke down. The move could mean users of the platform will no longer have access to songs by artists such as Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Drake.

Universal has accused TikTok of "bullying" and claims the social network was only willing to pay a "fraction" of what other networks pay for access to their extensive catalog.

However, representatives of the platform claim that Universal has made an untrue statement.

Music companies earn money from royalties for publishing and streaming their songs on social networks. Although TikTok, which is owned by Chinese company ByteDance, has more than a billion users, it contributes just one percent of the music publisher's total revenue, according to Universal.

In an open letter to the "community of artists and songwriters", Universal, which controls a third of the world's recorded music, claimed that "TikTok is trying to build a music-based business without paying fair value for the music itself".

The company declares that it will stop licensing content on TikTok from today, January 31, when their contract expires, writes the BBC.

In response, TikTok wrote: "It is sad and disappointing that Universal Music Group has put their greed over the interests of their artists."

Universal holds a dominant position in the world music industry and has the right to publish the music of a large number of globally known artists, such as the Beatles, Elton John, Adele, Coldplay, BTS and many others./ CNA
