Trump publicly supports Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth

President-elect Donald Trump on Friday publicly endorsed his nominee for Pentagon chief, Pete Hegseth, at a time when his Senate confirmation has been called into question amid concerns over allegations of sexual assault, alcohol use and his views on military women on the war front.

"Pete Hegseth is doing very well," Mr. Trump wrote on his profile on the Truth Social network. "He will be a fantastic and high-energy Secretary of Defense." The president-elect added that "Pete is a WINNER and nothing can be done to change that."

Mr. Hegseth spent much of this week holding meetings at the Capitol, trying to reassure Republican senators that he has the skills to lead the Pentagon under President Trump's administration.

He has promised not to drink alcohol if he takes office and has told lawmakers he has not committed sexual assault, while his professional views on female military forces are being watched closely. He said last month that women should not serve on the front line.

President-elect Trump has faced resistance from some of his appointees. Two of his picks for posts in the next administration withdrew from the nomination after facing strong opposition: Matt Gaetz, the former member of Congress, nominated for Attorney General, and Chad Chronister, the sheriff of Hillsborough County in Florida, nominated as director of the United States Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).

President-elect Trump's transition team is considering other possible candidates if Mr. Hegseth's nomination fails, including Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who ran against Mr. Trump in the Republican primary./ VOA
