The first round of the presidential elections in Romania is cancelled

Romania's Constitutional Court today annulled the first round of the country's presidential election, days after allegations that Russia had conducted a coordinated online campaign in support of the far-right candidate who won the first round.

The Constitutional Court's unprecedented decision - which is final - came after President Klaus Iohannis released revelations on Wednesday that Russia ran a vast campaign involving thousands of social media accounts to support Calin Georgescu on platforms such as TikTok and Telegram.

Despite being an unpopular candidate who declared zero campaign expenses, Mr. Georgescu won the largest number of votes on November 24. He was expected to face reformist Elena Lasconi of the Union to Save Romania party in a runoff on Sunday. A new date is now expected to be set to repeat the first round.

The intelligence information came from the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Foreign Intelligence Service, the Special Telecommunications Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

In light of the publication of this information, the Constitutional Court of Romania received numerous legal suits asking it to annul the first round vote, but it is not yet clear on what grounds it made its decision.

The same court last week ordered a recount of the first round of votes, which added to the many controversies that have accompanied a chaotic election cycle./ VOA
