Texas, House of Representatives votes to start impeachment of Attorney General

The Texas House of Representatives voted Saturday to begin impeachment proceedings against the state's attorney general, Ken Paxton, an ally of former President Donald Trump. Prosecutor Paxton has been accused by his Republican colleagues of abuse of office.

In today's historic proceeding, the 149-member House of Representatives voted to impeach Mr. Paxton.

121 members voted in favor, 23 against, two members did not participate in the vote while three were not present in the vote.

The Texas House of Representatives is controlled by Republicans, who have 85 members to 64 Democrats.

While Mr. Paxton received some support in the House of Representatives, perhaps the strongest message of support came from former President Trump, through the Truth Social platform.

Before the vote, Mr. Trump vowed to "fight" Republicans in the House of Representatives in the state of Texas if impeachment proceedings were launched against him.

The House of Representatives' General Committee of Inquiry sent the House of Representatives documents on 20 allegations against Mr. Paxton.

Most of the documents relate to Mr. Paxton's ties to a wealthy political donor, the conduct of an investigation into several former aides he had fired, and securities fraud.

After Saturday's vote, Mr Paxton issued a statement on Twitter calling the proceedings "illegal, unethical and deeply unfair". He has denied the accusations of abuse of office.

Mr. Paxton will be temporarily suspended from office pending a trial in the Senate, where his wife, Angela Paxton, is a senator./ VOA
