Russia plans to evacuate residents of Kherson amid advancing Ukrainian forces

Russia has promised free shelter to residents of its partially occupied Kherson region, a sign that the advance of Ukrainian military forces along the war's southern front has worried the Kremlin.

Kherson is one of four regions that were illegally annexed by Russian President Vladimir Putin last month. The region's Moscow-installed leader, Vladimir Saldo, asked the Kremlin to organize an evacuation of four towns, citing incessant artillery attacks by Ukrainian forces.

As Ukrainian forces continue their counteroffensive in the east and south of the country to retake occupied regions, Russian troops have withdrawn from some areas they took control of shortly after the offensive began on February 24.

Ukraine's advances on the ground and the Oct. 8 explosion of a key bridge linking Russia to Crimea have fueled domestic criticism of the Kremlin's handling of the war and increased pressure on President Putin to do more to to change the course of developments on the front in favor of Russia./ VOA
