Putin calls Macron's criticism of Armenia-Azerbaijan tensions

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, on October 14 rejected the statements of his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, that Moscow is destabilizing the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Baku and Yerevan have been in conflict for more than three decades over the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh. This is after separatists supported by Armenia took control of the region which is mainly inhabited by Armenians.

Putin shtoi se deklaratat e Macronit “tingëllojnë të pasakta, mund të them edhe perverse, prandaj ato janë të papranueshme”.

Më 13 tetor, zëdhënësja e Ministrisë së Jashtme ruse, Maria Zakharova, tha se deklaratat e Macronit ishin “absolutisht të papranueshme”.

Last week, Macron together with the president of the European Council, Charles Michel, met with the president of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the prime minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinian.

The two states fought a six-week war in 2020, after which Russia brokered a ceasefire agreement that resulted in Armenia losing control of parts of the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

According to the ceasefire agreement, Moscow has deployed around 2,000 troops in the region as part of peacekeeping forces.

At the meeting between Aliyev and Pashinian, which took place in Prague, European authorities said the leaders agreed that a civilian EU mission should be stationed at the border between the states. On the border, over 200 people were killed in the fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan that broke out a few weeks ago./REL
