Ukraine has been experiencing attacks on critical infrastructure for several weeks. Last week, nationwide attacks in Ukraine left entire regions without electricity. Today's attacks renew fears that this will be a dangerous winter for millions of Ukrainians, who could face months of harsh winter weather without heat or electricity.

Last week, the first snow of the year fell in Kiev, where the temperature is now around -3C and is expected to drop further over the coming days.

The Ukrainian government has long warned the citizens that Russia will continue to target the energy infrastructure, considering that the winter in Ukraine is really very harsh, writes the BBC.

Energy Minister Herman Halushchenko said Russia's latest attack seeks to "cause maximum damage to our energy system on the eve of winter".

In October, Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk urged Ukrainian refugees not to return until spring to help ease pressure on the energy system, saying that as temperatures drop, the situation would "only get worse".

"If possible, stay abroad for now," she said, adding: "We have to survive the winter."/ CNA.al
