Mission in the Strait of Hormuz/ Britain sends warship to the Middle East

The UK has said it is sending the warship HMS Dragon to the Middle East as part of a multinational effort to protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Britain's move comes after France deployed its aircraft carrier strike group to the southern Red Sea.

HMS Dragon, an air defense destroyer, was sent to the Eastern Mediterranean in March, shortly after the start of the war with Iran, to help defend Cyprus.

"The pre-positioning of HMS Dragon is part of careful planning that will ensure the UK is ready, as part of a multinational coalition led jointly by the UK and France, to secure the Straits when conditions permit," a British Ministry of Defence spokesman said.

Both countries have planned measures to ensure the safe transit of ships through the Strait once Iran and the US reach a long-term peace agreement.

A fragile ceasefire remains in place, although Friday's attacks saw US forces hit two Iranian tankers that were trying to breach the US blockade of Hormuz. /CNA
