Keir Starmer: British planes on defensive mission over Middle East

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said British aircraft are currently "in the skies" over the Middle East as part of coordinated defensive operations to ensure the security of the country's interests and allies.

In a televised address on Saturday, Starmer stressed that the UK had no role in the joint US-Israeli strikes on Iran. However, he confirmed that British forces are active in the region as part of defensive missions.

"British aircraft are in the skies today as part of coordinated regional defensive operations to protect our people, our interests and our allies," he said.

The British Prime Minister called on Iran to avoid further escalation of the situation, demanding that it abandon its weapons program and stop, as he put it, "the horrific violence and oppression against the Iranian people."

The statement comes at a time of high tension in the Middle East, as international powers are calling for restraint and stability in the region./ CNA
