Erdogan "makes peace" with Sweden/ Accepts NATO membership

The President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has agreed to support Sweden's membership in NATO.

This is what the head of the Western military alliance, Jens Stoltenberg, said on July 10, after the meeting in Vilnius, Lithuania with Erdogan and the Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson.

"President Erdo?an has agreed to take Sweden's acceptance protocol to the National Assembly as soon as possible and will work closely with the Assembly to have the protocol ratified," he said.

"This is a historic day," Stoltenberg added during an address to the media.

In a separate statement, it was announced that Sweden and Turkey have reached an agreement.

Turkey has blocked Sweden's application to the alliance, accusing Stockholm of harboring Kurdish activists Ankara considers terrorists.

Earlier on Monday, Erdogan made Sweden's accession conditional on Turkey's membership in the European Union.

But, in the statement issued after the tripartite meeting, it was said that Turkey and Sweden will work closely "in counter-terrorism coordination" and will strengthen bilateral trade relations.

"Sweden will actively support efforts to revive Turkey's EU accession process, including the modernization of the EU-Turkey customs union and visa liberalization," the statement said.

For a country to become a member of NATO, all 32 countries must ratify the accession protocols in their parliaments. In the case of Sweden, apart from Turkey, even Hungary has not ratified the protocol for Stockholm to become part of the alliance./ REL
