By Ross Pomeroy "Big Think"
Over time, a person's personality can change, even a lot.
But psychologists have not always thought so. While someone's personality—that is, their broad pattern of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors—might change in some peripheral aspects, scientists think that it was generally something fixed.
Then long-term studies that measured movements in personality traits, why the "big five", managed to change the attitude of psychologists. As people grew older, these essential traits also changed.
They are:
(1) conscientiousness (how impulsive, organized, and disciplined one is);
(2) agreeableness (how modest, trustworthy, and caring he is);
(3) extraversion (if a person seeks exciting events and social interaction);
(4) openness to new experiences (one's curiosity and tendency to break out of the usual routine);
(5) neuroticism (a person's overall emotional stability).
But what causes these personality changes? Recently, researchers have analyzed the impact of significant life events.
In dozens of studies published over the past 30 years, scientists have attempted to measure changes in the Big 5 personality traits that occur after major family, career, and relationship events.
Last year, a team of scientists from institutes in Germany and Switzerland conducted a meta-analysis to tease apart the broad findings. In their paper published in the European Journal of Personality, they discovered the life events that are most likely to change someone's personality.
Events that change a person's personality
The authors of the study focused on these 10 life events:
(1) entering into a new relationship,
(2) marriage,
(3) the birth of a child
(4) separation
(5) divorce
(6) surviving widow or widower
(7) graduation
(8) starting the first job
(9) unemployment
(10) retirement.
They analyzed 44 studies that tracked the progress of the subjects' 5 main personality traits before and after these events. The studies involved a total of 121,187 participants, almost all from Western countries.
Studimet e mëparshme, kishin zbuluar se shpeshherë personalitetet tona “përmirësohen” me kalimin e moshës.
The transformation is gradual, essentially invisible to the individual himself. But after many years, almost everyone can reflect on their former selves and be amazed at the differences.
As the new meta-analysis suggests, certain life events appear to accelerate this personality change./ Adapted from CNA
