University of Shkodra requests more budget/ Gjuraj: Out of the 639 million we

The University of Shkodra has requested a budget increase from the Albanian government for 2026 due to the increase in the number of scholarships and new study programs. Rector Gjuraj announced this during the academic senate meeting….

" On Saturday, the President of the Republic Bajram Begaj will be present in Shkodra for Alphabet Day and it is good for us as a university that the President chose to be in Shkodra since it is the first time that this day is an official holiday. We were invited to the hearing session for the government's 2026 Budget bill where we presented our budget requests for 2026 to the Education Committee. Two or three main budget requests that remain a permanent request of ours are, first, the increase in the teaching grant and this is not a separate goal. We have requested 700 million from the 629 million that was last year. I have reinforced the request that one of the two buildings, the former sanatorium or the former psychiatric hospital, be transferred to the ownership of the University of Shkodra ," said the rector.

Rector Gjuraj stated that the University of Shkodra has also requested the accreditation of 39 study programs, while he requested from the Faculty of Social Sciences to open a bachelor's program for Albanological studies, driven by a course that will be for the certification of the Albanian language for teaching Albanian to foreigners or even Albanians...

" We have already started the process of accrediting the programs. There are three programs that are housed at the Faculty of Educational Sciences that has started the process and we have also applied for the accreditation of all study programs, which are 39 programs, and we completed the application a few days ago, so we are on the right track. We will have an Albanian language certification course for Albanians and foreigners who want to learn the Albanian language. We will discuss the details of this and it goes in line with the efforts we are making with the Academic Diaspora to have the opportunity for this university, unlike other universities, to offer a professional master's degree for teachers of the Diaspora. I ask the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Center for Albanological Studies, since we are making these efforts, to achieve a bachelor's program for Albanological studies. One point that is expected to change in the law is that teaching be given both physically and online, and since the demands are great, I ask them to sit down and look seriously at this Albanological program ," said Gjuraj.

At the Senate meeting, Rector Gjuraj said that next year, work in high schools to attract as many students as possible for the "Luigj Gurakuqi" University will begin in March, earlier than in previous years.
