Rudi Völler will be the new director and manager of the German national team from February 1. The official website of the German Football Federation states that the decision was taken after a working group between DFB president Neuendorf, vice president Watzke, Voeller, Rummenigge, Kahn and Mintzlaff.

The former player and coach of 'Panzers' commented on the decision: "After many fantastic years at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, I am returning to the place where I was able to experience wonderful moments as a coach. I am approaching my new job with the national team with gratitude, passion and great motivation. First of all, we must lay the foundations for a successful European Championship on our soil in 2024, supported by all of Germany.

We have the players for that. Now we want to form a close-knit community of these many top players, a strong-willed and likable national team with the clear aim of winning unlimited fan support. And above all, I want to give an advantage to national coach Hansi Flick and his coaching team."

He succeeds Oliver Bierhoff in this position after the disappointment of the last World Cup, in Qatar, in which the traditional title contenders failed to get past the group stage, repeating the bad image left in 2018, in Russia.

We remember that Rudi Voller coached the Mannschaft in the 2002 World Cup final (South Korea/Japan), where they were defeated by Brazil, with a score of 0-2. As a footballer, the former scorer was vice-champion of the World Cup in 1986, in Mexico, losing in the final, with Argentina, with the result 2-3, a match in which he scored one of the goals of the then Germany (Federal Republic of Germany).
