The Albanian FIFA referee, Juxhin Xhaja, was at the Thessaloniki derby on Sunday, Aris-PAOK 1-2.

As this match is of high risk to manage, clubs often do not want local referees and to avoid controversy or prejudice, the Greek federation takes referees from other countries. This time, the trio of referees was from Sweden, while in the VAR system, for the first time in a match of the Greek championship, an Albanian was selected, namely Xhaja. Ironically, the fate of the meeting is related to the 32-year-old from Tirana, since in the 68th minute he signaled the main referee, Muhamed al Hakim (Iraqi with Swedish citizenship).

The latter, after examining the case with VAR, awarded an 11-meter penalty for PAOK, as this resulted in a temporary draw. However, the Greek media have exploded in criticism of the federation recently, openly attacking Xhaja as well. There is no shortage of ironies, describing the Albanian referee as a tourist who came to Greece to signal a non-existent penalty.

"A penalty awarded by Tirana or so to speak Iran-Iraq, judged by a referee from... Iraq", was one of the headlines of the Greek media. According to them, it was not at all necessary for the federation to take an Albanian in the VAR system and thus, in this case, Xhaja was also crossed.
