"When I came back to England, I slept 15 hours a night," marvels

Emiliano Martínez has admitted that it was difficult to return to earth after the triumph with Argentina at the World Cup in Qatar on 18 December.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper was one of the last to return to the club, along with Messi. He emphasized that the return to normality was difficult.

"I don't drink alcohol, not even soda. When I came back to England, I slept 14 or 15 hours a night, when normally I only need 7 or 8 hours. You can understand how much adrenaline I had built up and how hard it was to come back.

But I love this club (Aston Villa), I wanted to be here as soon as possible, when I arrived I was focused, having celebrated at my place. The club gave me everything."

Speaking about his career, Martinez added:

"I came to England very young, to one of the best clubs in the country (at Arsenal, aged 17) to have a successful career and try to be the best goalkeeper in Argentina, number 1, that was my goal, but I never dreamed of winning the World Cup.

But I made it, I played with the best in history (Messi), no one else has done what he has achieved. I had some obstacles during my career, but I was strong enough to overcome them.”
