A study shows that using salt at dinner is one of the worst things you can do to your body.

Researchers tracked more than 500,000 Britons for almost a decade.

The results showed that people who always added extra salt to their meals were 28 percent more likely to die before the age of 75, compared to those who never or rarely added it.

Excess salt in your system leads to water retention in your blood, putting pressure on your blood vessels, raising your blood pressure. This can then increase the risk of a heart attack or stroke.

Heart disease and stroke are among the biggest killers, killing about 160,000 a year, with the American death toll about five times higher.

NHS guidelines say adults should not eat more than 6g of salt a day. Children should consume even less salt./ CNA.al
