EU calls for second booster dose against COVID-19

The European Union said on July 11 that it is "critical" that authorities in the bloc's 27 states consider giving a second booster dose to all people aged 60 to 79, but also to other vulnerable categories, while the new wave of the pandemic is hitting the continent.

"With the increase in infections and hospitalizations as we enter the summer period, I urge everyone to get vaccinated and receive booster doses as soon as possible. There is no time to lose", said the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides.

Qendra Evropiane për Kontroll dhe Parandalim të Sëmundjeve (ECDC) dhe Agjencia Evropiane për Ilaçe thanë se doza e dytë përforcuese mund të administrohet te personat që kanë marrë dozën e parë përforcuese para të paktën katër muajve.

Ky rekomandim vjen pasi këto dy agjenci rekomanduan në prill që për personat mbi 80 vjeç të konsiderohej dhënia e dozës së dytë përforcuese.

“Teksa vala e re aktualisht po përhapet në Evropë dhe po shoqërohet me rritjen e hospitalizimeve dhe shtrimeve në njësitë e kujdesit shëndetësor, është kritike që autoritetet e shëndetit publik tani të konsiderojnë që qytetarët ndërmjet 60 dhe 79 vjeç, por edhe ata më të ndjeshëm, të marrin dozën e dytë përforcuese”, thanë këto dy agjenci përmes një deklarate.

ECDC Director Andrea Ammon said the new wave of the pandemic is being driven by the highly transmissible BA.5 mutation of the Omition variant of the coronavirus.

The EU recommendation comes as scientists are also concerned about Omicron's other mutation, called BA2.75, which has spread in India and other countries.

Scientists believe that this new variant may spread more quickly and may avoid the protection offered by vaccines or previous infections. It is still unclear whether this mutation causes more severe disease than previous Omicron variants./REL
