The perpetrator of the shooting at the White House Correspondents' Dinner was targeting US President Donald Trump and members of his administration.

This was stated by the acting Attorney General, Todd Blanche. The latter said in an interview with NBC that the accused traveled across the country, taking a train from California to Chicago and then to Washington, before checking into the hotel where the event would take place.

"Apparently, he actually intended to target people working in the administration, most likely including the president. The suspect is believed to have purchased the firearms he was carrying within the last two years ," Blanche said.

The person tried to force his way into the ballroom at the Washington Hilton but was stopped, causing a chaotic scene that included shots fired. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were rushed off the stage and guests were also evacuated.

Authorities are analyzing the messages along with data from the suspect's devices and writings to find clues about the motive or causes of the attack. According to Prosecutor Blanche, the perpetrator is not actively cooperating with the investigation. /CNA
