The White House press secretary issued a statement today regarding the incident that occurred at the Correspondents' Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Connecticut Avenue.

In a post on "X," Leavitt says the evening took another turn from a person seeking to assassinate the President and kill as many senior Trump administration officials as possible.

“What was supposed to be a fun night at the WHCA with President Trump cracking jokes and celebrating free speech was hijacked by a deranged and depraved individual who sought to assassinate the President and kill as many senior Trump administration officials as possible. I was with President Trump and the First Lady backstage as we were quickly escorted to safety by the Secret Service. President Trump was truly fearless, but as he said last night, this political violence must end. Thank you to law enforcement for keeping us all safe, including the brave officer who took a bullet to the chest and immediately acted to neutralize the perpetrator.
