A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Crete shortly after 3:00 a.m., causing concern among the island's residents. According to the Geodynamic Institute, the epicenter was seven kilometers northwest of Goudouras, Lassithi, while the depth was estimated at five kilometers.
OASP President Efthymios Lekkas spoke about the seismic tremors on ERTnews and the "Connections" show, giving initial assessments.
As Mr. Lekkas stated: "We have an earthquake south of Lassithi. The first magnitude is 5.5 in the marine area at a depth of 5 kilometers. We have not yet seen the exact data of the earthquake because it is the automatic system, I believe it is an earthquake that will be widely felt in Crete, Kasos and Karpathos, but we do not have more data at the moment. Basically we are waiting for the recordings to be able to assess the whole situation."
He also added: "It happened near Cherso, it must have been felt especially throughout Lasithi and the rest of Crete. At the moment the exact magnitude and location are being calculated, at 5 kilometers the earthquake is superficial, but we will know the individual details and the exact data in a little while."
According to seismologist Akis Tselentis, the tremor had a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale and was localized 405 kilometers south-southeast of Athens, 25 kilometers southwest of Goudoura, Lassithi, in the maritime area. As the seismologist reported, the earthquake was felt throughout Crete, however, he described the phenomenon as expected, noting that there is no reason for concern. He also stressed that in recent months intense microseismic activity has been recorded in the area./ CNA
