Convicted for political reasons/ Renowned journalist released from Belarusian prison

Prominent journalist Andrzej Poczobut has been released from prison in Belarus in an exchange with Poland, where a total of 10 prisoners were also freed, as Belarus' leader seeks improved relations with the West.

Poczobut, a correspondent for the influential Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza and a leading figure among Belarus's Polish minority, was serving eight years in prison for "harming the national security of Belarus" in a case convicted as politically motivated.

His arrest in 2021 sparked widespread criticism and he was later awarded the European Union's most prestigious human rights award, the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought.

The exchange is the latest in a series of US-negotiated prisoner releases that have marked stronger relations between Minsk and the West during US President Donald Trump's second term.
