Every year that passes, Albania is setting a new record in terms of tourism.

The latest data published by the Bank of Albania on the balance of payments revealed that travel expenses by foreigners in Albania reached a level of 4.99 billion euros, with an increase of 19.6% compared to the same period a year earlier.

This is the income record ever recorded in the country and much higher than before the pandemic, when in 2019, foreign inflows were around 2 billion euros.

By quarter, the highest flow was in the third quarter, with 1.9 billion euros, which coincides with the peak of the tourist season. For the first time and during the second and fourth quarters, flows were above 1 billion euros (1.16 and 1.13), indicating an expansion of tourism beyond the traditional season.

Other INSTAT data revealed that a record 11.7 million foreign citizens entered the country in 2024, with an increase of 15.2% on an annual basis.

However, the first months of this year are showing signs of a slowdown in tourism growth in the country.

Albanians also record spending abroad

While foreigners are discovering Albania, Albanians are increasingly traveling abroad, driven by cheap tickets and the increase in direct destinations. Bank of Albania data shows that Albanians' spending abroad was 2.7 billion euros, an increase of 15.6% compared to the previous year.

Other INSTAT data revealed that in 2024, Albanians' departures abroad reached nearly 7.9 million, with an increase of 14% on an annual basis.

Positive balance of 2.3 billion euros

Unlike more than a decade ago, when the tourism balance was close to zero, with foreigners in Albania spending almost as much as Albanians abroad, in recent years the situation has reversed, as a result of the high influx of foreigners coming to the country. In 2024, the travel balance was positive at 2.3 billion euros, with an increase of almost 25% on an annual basis./ Monitor Magazine
